THE
STORY
OF THE LLOYD FAMILY
Background Information on the Whirlwind
The Whirlwind was a 978 ton Clipper Ship under the command of
Captain Edward Dover Edgell. The trip was quite eventful and is well
detailed in the newspaper reports from the local papers. Originally
sailing from London, it quickly put into port at Plymouth, due to
damage to the rudder. While repairs were under way, there was an
outbreak of scarlet fever and those affected were removed to a hulk
to recover. The ship sailed again from Plymouth on either the 4th or
10th January 1855 and arrived in Launceston on the 2nd April with 4
saloon passengers, 76 families and 57 single people. There had been
44 deaths, including those from the fever, along with seven births.
The agents for the ship were Du Croz, Jackson & Co.
The ship carded a cargo of 106 cases of pickles, 2 packages of
almonds, 40 packages of raisins, 100 boxes of candles, 6
half-tierces of tobacco, 6 cases of galvanised iron, 6 cases of
books, 1 case of personal items, 1 case of jewellery and 488 deals,
176 cases, 28 trunks, 36 bales, 3 packages of manufactures.
Ernest Lloyd arrived in Tasmania in 1855 (aged 12) on the "WHIRLWIND"
with
Father: William Lloyd (age 37)
Mother: Sophia Lloyd (age 37)
Brother & Sisters: Fanny (age
2) Jessy (age 4)
Dorcas (age 6) Henrietta (age 13)
Ernest LLOYD married Jane Elizabeth HART (daughter of William
Doubleday HART and Ann GREEN. Elizabeth was born 1841 Launceston
Tas.) in Launceston on the 3rd of March 1864.
Their first child (William) was born at Launceston in 1865. They
moved to Campbell Town late 1865 or early 1866 where the remainder
of their eight children were born.
Records indicate that Ernest was a builder (stonemason) and it
appears that William followed in his father's footsteps as he is
listed as being a builder also in later records.
Kenneth Henry was the last of the children born to Ernest and Jane.
Four children of Ernest and Jane (siblings of Kenneth Henry) appear
to have no christian names. These may have been early deaths as
infants or not registered, but this is yet to be confirmed.
Kenneth and his siblings moved with their parents to Ulverstone in
October 1887. He was enrolled at Ulverstone State School on
4/10/1887. He was 10 y and 9m at that time.
Sometime around 1895/96 William and Kenneth moved to the mainland
(Victoria).
Kenneth celebrated his 21st birthday at the Briagolong Hotel
(licensee: William WILSON) where he and his brother (William)
worked.
Kenneth met and married Amy Jane BENNETT (daughter of Edward and
Rebecca Oliver HARRISON. b. 16th of February 1869) in
Melbourne in October 1905.
Edith was born to Amy in 1905 but it is unclear as to who her father
was. Edith died in 1906.
Olive Jean was born at Carlton 16th of December 1910 to Kenneth and
Amy.
Amy died on the 27th of September 1911 at their residence at 74
Victoria Street, Carlton
Kenneth remarried Esther HEAZLEWOOD in 1913 at Melbourne.
Olive Jean LLOYD was raised by her Aunt and Uncle (Amy Jane's sister
Rebecca Oliver BENNETT and her husband Patrick HICKEY) from the age
of 9 months at Briagolong.
Olive became a Nurse's Aide at St David's Hospital in Maffra. From
there she went to Melbourne to work as a Nurse's Aide a a Nursing
Home run by John Edward Croxford's sisters.
Olive Jean met and married John Edward CROXFORD (son of John Edward
and Adria Mary PERRY. b. 24th of December 1902) at Prahran on the
21st April 1931.
Olive Jean and John Edward moved to Briagolong in the late 1930s,
back to the same house where Olive was raised by her Aunt and Uncle.
They had four children, two born in Melbourne and two born at
Maffra.
Olive Jean CROXFORD (nee LLOYD) died on the 24 March 1997 at Maffra.
