The Earl of Charlemont was shipwrecked at Barwon Heads on 18th June 1853.
She had sailed from Liverpool, England with immigrants for the new colony of Victoria.
Only one life was lost, that of Robert THWAITES (sen). He died of shock soon after
the vessel struck rocks. His body was recovered by his son Robert (jun) the next day.
