HMS Calcutta

In 1803 the British Government dispatched an expedition under David Collins to found a settlement
on Port Phillip, with the intention of forestalling any attempt by the French to occupy the area.
Collins arrived in October 1803 on the Calcutta with 300 convicts and free settlers.
They built a small settlement on the eastern side of Port Phillip, near where Sorrento stands today.
