Henry DAVIS was born about 1817 in London England, he was baptized 5 Nov 1817 at St Mary Church, Lambeth, England.  His parents were James DAVIS (1776 - ) and Charlotte Ann  COLES (1777 - ). He died on 20 May 1896 in Appin Victoria Australia at age 78, and was buried on 25 May 1896 in Kerang, Victoria, Australia.

General Notes: When and how Henry arrived in Victoria is so far a mystery. Family oral history indicates he was a sub Lieutenant in the Navy (or Merchant Navy) and that he jumped ship at Portland Bay (about 1840). No records have been found to support this theory.
The marriage date for Henry and Catherine is not known for certain. The marriage date of 10th March 1842 at PORTLAND BAY is from James birth certificate (Aug 1864), this is unproven.
The mystery of many of the children being baptized as MORGAN not DAVIS has yet to be solved.
The family spent some time from at least 1853 to about 1863 at Indented Head (on the Bellarine Peninsula, Victoria) where a number of the children were born.
The 1856 census lists Henry as a farmer at Bellarine (between Drysdale and Portarlington)
On 14 Feb 1861 he appears in the records of the Court of Petty Sessions, Drysdale before J C LANDON as the complainant against William DYER for trespass.The case was dismissed.
Moved to the gold diggings northeast of Ballarat at Bullarook between 1862 and 1864. Moved to a farm at Appin (Appin South) near Boort about the mid 1870s. Obituary in the Kerang times indicates he was a successful miner, but not as successful in property investment and as a farmer.

 He worked as a Shoemaker, Goldminer & Farmer.

Henry married Catherine MONAGHAN on 10 Mar 1842 in Portland, Victoria, Australia. This date is taken from the birth certificate of James DAVIS (b. 1864) but no proof of this marriage has yet been found.
Catherine was born in about 1824 in Cavan Town, Co. Cavan Ireland, died on 12 Nov 1893 in Appin Victoria Australia at age 69, and was buried on 14 Nov 1893 in Kerang, Victoria, Australia.

The spelling of the surname is in doubt (m/c not clear)
Monahan or Monaghan or Moryhan or Moriyhan.
